Canada Cheese made with Non-Canadian Milk?
Kraft Canada, Parmalat and Saputo might soon not use Canadian milk from Canadian cows in their cheeses. These three multinational dairy product giants might substitute it with milk protein concentrates from other countries probably because they will be buying it much cheaper. So it all boils down to the money and no doubt they will be making a lot of it otherwise they would probably not be taking this step.
The problem is, this kind of trend could undermine the whole Canadian milk industry. First for cheese, then probably for other dairy products, then maybe the milk – who knows? So where would that leave the local dairy industry? Canada’s farmers produce for the local requirements and they get a fair price for their milk. However, lower quality milk protein concentrates have been insidiously making their way into Canadian markets and that meant that was a surplus of milk production in the country.
Today, with the melamine scandal in the picture, Canadians are naturally worried about the milk sources in their cheese.
