Danisco Expands Its Polish Kefir Plant

July 17th, 2008

For hundreds of years, Eastern European countries and some Central European ones too, have made and drunk kefir as part of their daily diet. Did they know how good it was for them or was it just a part of their traditional diet which they carried on? Well, recent studies and reports have turned the focus on the incredible goodness of kefir and a lot of the immunity and good health, not to mention a long life that kefir-eating people enjoy have been attributed to this fermented drink.

Of course, this means that kefir has come out of its natural setting and burst upon the world scene. Towards meeting this demand, dairy ingredients giant Danisco has expanded its plant in Poland. This major expansion is expected to cater to part of the global demand for kefir – in fact, they have trebled their production. This plant now includes a fully automated line for lactic acid fermentation so that more and newer forms of kefir can be made. What the company is also looking at is to get two great products together – kefir and probiotics. There is a move to supply this combination in a freeze-dried powdered form in individual sachet packs so that people can buy it and make the drink at home. The many benefits that this drink is supposed to have must be shared with the rest of the world.
