Growth Hormones Going From Dannon Products
Following General Mills’ decision, Dannon too is phasing out rBST treated cow’s milk and they hope that all their products in the US will be free of this growth hormone by the end of the year. Though rBST is a growth hormone that has been approved by the FDA and has been classified by this regulating body as safe, consumers have waged a battle against its use for many years now. It looks like what they have to say is bringing pressure on companies to fall in line and bow to consumer preference.
Once companies started putting rBST-free on their labels, it was a foregone conclusion that all dairy products would have to follow suit sooner or later. Finally, it is consumer demand that drives the market and no matter how safe a product is said to be, even by the topmost food regulatory body, if the consumer believes otherwise, companies would do well to fall in line unless they want a downward curve in their sales figures.
