Milk Trickling, Not Flowing

May 9th, 2008

It’s starting to be felt all over the world and Japan seems to be one the first ones to experience the threat of shortages looming large. Whatever the reason – feed prices going up, the demand in growing economies surging, grain shortages – the fact of the matter is that milk isn’t free flowing anymore.

True, the shortages are being experienced in other products as well and the prices are spiraling upward – whether it’s bread, pasta, cooking oil, whatever. And of course, milk too. Many of the supermarket shelves in Japan are sans butter while the price of milk has skyrocketed. Japanese farmers are feeling the heat of cattle feed prices going up and it just isn’t viable for them to try and increase the domestic production of milk.

Most Japanese households say that they’ve started feeling the strain because the price rise in foods has begun to impact the household budget. A first for many, they have started cutting down or looking for cheaper alternatives.
